Seahawks Split Doubleheader with Mustangs in Season Opener

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md - The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team (1-1) started their 2019 campaign by splitting their double header against the visiting Stevenson University Mustangs (1-1) on Friday (Feb. 15) afternoon. The Seahawks won the first game 6-5 in walkoff fashion and dropped the second game 9-3.

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • Stevenson put two runs on the board in the top of the second off a Brady Kessler single. The Seahawks cut into the Mustang lead in the bottom of the inning as a passed ball advanced runners on base and scored Dillon Waters.

  • St. Mary's kept their offensive momentum into the third inning, tallying two runs for a 3-2 lead. Bowen Plagge ripped a single into right field for the Seahawks second run of the game and Andy Collins reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing Jay Hammett home.

  • Stevenson responded by tying the game at three to start the fifth inning. However, the Seahawks captured the lead once again in the bottom half of the inning off a two run bomb from D. Waters.

  • The Mustangs once again battled back and knotted the game at seven in the seventh inning. With the possibility of extra innings, the Seahawks stepped up and finished the game with a walk off single from Plagge. Dan McCann started the inning drawing a walk. Brady Waters advanced McCann to second in the next at bat, and Plagge finished the game with the single.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Seahawks used five different pitchers in the contest with Matt Ansaldi picking up the victory. Ansaldi and Nick Testoni both picked up one strikeout in their short outings.

  • Plagge led the Seahawks offensively, going three-of-four from the plate with two RBI and one run. D. Waters followed Plaglee, finishing two-of-three from the plate and recording two RBI.

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • Stevenson pulled out to a 4-0 lead three and half innings into the contest. St Mary's tacked on their first runs of the game in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double from Brady Waters and a Connor Coursey single that plated two runs.

  • Solid pitching for the next two innings kept the game at 4-3 heading into the seventh in favor of Stevenson. However, Stevenson broke the game open in the inning with five runs.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Seahawks sent five different pitchers to the bump in the game. Connor Manion recorded three strikeouts, but was charged with the loss.

  • Tyler Taitano finished the game two-of-three from the plate and added a run. Coursey led the Seahawks with 2 RBI, while B. Waters added one.
