St. Mary's City, Md. – Second-year head coach Jessica Lanham has put out the 2017 St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey schedule. This year's campaign has St. Mary's renewing matchups with four opponents and starting a new series with another.
There are 18 regular-season games on this year's schedule, including seven home contests at Seahawk Stadium. The Seahawks will take on three opponents who all competed in the 2016 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament – Salisbury University (semifinals), University of Rochester (N.Y.) (second round), and Shenandoah University (first round).
In addition, Salisbury (No. 2) and Rochester (No. 15) finished ranked in the final Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Coaches Poll, while the University of Mary Washington was ranked fifth in the NCAA South Region.
St. Mary's opens up the season on road with a night game at Goucher College on September 1 before traveling to Owings Mills to face Stevenson University on the 3rd. The meeting at Goucher will be the first since 2011 while the matchup at Stevenson is the first since 2014.
The Seahawks will have back-to-back home games against Randolph-Macon College (Sept. 6) and Bridgewater (Va.) College (Sept. 9) to kick off the season in Seahawk Stadium. Rochester (Sept. 10) and Wilson College (Sept. 13) are up next as the team heads back out on the road. The Rochester game will be played at Johns Hopkins University while St. Mary's is facing Wilson for the first time since 1999.
Back-to-back games versus Roanoke College (Sept. 16) and Susquehanna University (Sept. 17) will take up the third weekend of September. The Susquehanna contest will be played at the Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson. Three of the last four games in September will be on the road.
For the first-time ever, St. Mary's will battle Washington & Jefferson College (Oct. 1) as the Seahawks begin October on the road in Washington, Pennsylvania. The road trip continues in Pennsylvania as Capital Athletic Conference play starts up at York College on October 7. A three-game home-stand kicks off on the 10th with Mary Washington before welcoming Wesley College (Oct. 15) and Christopher Newport University (Oct. 19) to campus.
Salisbury (Oct. 25) will be the final regular-season matchup on the Eastern Shore before the CAC Tournament begins October 28 with first round action. The semifinals and championship follow on November 1 and November 4, respectively.
Last season, the Seahawks advanced to the first round of the CAC Field Hockey Championship Tournament and finished with a 5-12 (2-4 CAC) record.
