How It Happened

  • Trailing 13-3, the Seahawks inched themselves back into the game with a 5-0 run, forcing a Christopher Newport timeout. Spencer Schultz started the run with a layup and Justin Milstead followed with a made three-pointer.

  • Christopher Newport slowly extended their lead throughout the rest of the first half. However, the Seahawks stayed in the game with another five-point run to end the first half. Zach Spooner found Darick Kerns who connected with a layup, and Schultz finished the run with a layup and made free throw. St. Mary's headed into the locker rooms trailing Christopher Newport 41-27.

  • Naheed John looked to build momentum for the Seahawks with a made layup to begin the second half. The Captains quickly answered by draining two three pointers and a layup for a swift eight-point swing.

  • With 7:34 remaining in regulation, St. Mary's strung together nine-straight points to cut the deficit to 69-51. Austin Heller initiated the run by driving to the rim and sinking a tough layup. Heller drew a foul during the play and sunk the ensuing free throw. Spooner followed with an impressive dunk, while Kerns and Rodney Christian drained free throws to cap the run.

  • Christopher Newport finished the game strong, outscoring St. Mary's 10-1 for the victory.
