Second Half Rally Upends Men’s Basketball at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. - A second half rally from the Salisbury Sea Gulls (14-5, 4-4 CAC) upended the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team (7-12, 1-7 CAC) 97-77 Saturday (Jan. 26) afternoon in CAC action. The Seahawks held a 51-44 lead at half before the Sea Gulls rallied in the second half.

How It Happened

  • The first half of action between the Seahawks and Sea Gulls was an exciting offensive shootout. St. Mary's shot 58.6 percent from the field, while Salisbury shot 51.7 percent. Additionally, both squads found success from beyond the three-point arch with St. Mary's shooting 53.8 percent and Salisbury shooting 62.5 percent from three.

  • Tied at seven in the first half, the Seahawks strung together five-straight points for a 12-7 lead. Jordan Alston started the run with a made three-pointer and Phil Newsome followed with two made free throws. With 5:21 remaining in the half, the Seahawks trailed by one, but finished the period strong. St. Mary's doubled Salisbury's point total in the final five minutes, outscoring the Sea Gulls 16-8. Justin Milstead capped the impressive end to the half with a long range three-ball, giving the Seahawks a 51-44 lead.

  • Salisbury wasted little time to retake the lead in the second half, capturing a 54-53 advantage over St. Mary's at the 16:51 mark. Once they grabbed the lead, the Sea Gulls never gave it up and continued to separate themselves from the Seahawks for the remainder of the half.

Inside the Box Score

  • Spencer Schultz led the Seahawks with 15 points and eight rebounds.

  • Three other Seahawks reached double digits in the game. Milstead finished with 11 points, while Darick Kerns and Matt Ayoub accounted for 10 points each. Kerns also finished with two blocks on the night.

  • Gary Briddell led all scorers in the game with 25 points off the bench. Blair Davis finished with a double-double, knocking down 21 points and gathering 10 rebounds.
