Seahawks Post Dominant Victory Over Marywood in Season Opener

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse (1-0) opened up their season in dominant fashion, posting a 17-5 victory over the visiting Marywood College Pacers (0-1) on Sunday (Feb. 10) afternoon.

St. Mary's - 17, Marywood - 5

How It Happened

  • First year attackman Jude Brown started the scoring for the Seahawks, finding the back of the net at the 9:23 mark of the opening quarter. Marywood answered with a goal of their own a minute and half later to even score at one apiece. Next, St. Mary's strung together three unanswered scores to end the quarter. Erich Wuesthoff accounted for two goals during the run and Connor Benhoff added the third.

  • The second stanza was more of a defensive battle, but the Seahawks still outscored the Pacers 2-1. Ray LaPlaca and Dominic Venanzi both found the back of the cage with unassisted goal in the second quarter. Marywood's lone score in the stanza was an own goal by St. Mary's.

  • The flood gates opened in the second half of action as the Seahawks overpowered the Pacers in a dominant 11-3 half in favor of St. Mary's. The Seahawks scored three-straight to begin the third quarter to pull ahead of the Pacers 9-2. Wuesthoff and Ben Claffee tallied the first two scores, while Max Groen added the third goal to begin the half off a man-up opportunity. Groen scored off an accurate feed from Brown. Marywood scored 30 seconds later to stop the bleeding, but the Seahawks captured the momentum again with the final three scores of the third. Groen, Jeremiah Clemmer, and LaPlaca were responsible for the final three goals that put the Seahawks ahead 12-3.

  • Much like the rest of the game, the fourth quarter was owned by the Seahawks. St. Mary's strung together four-straight goals to extend their lead to 16-4. Jaylen DeCarlo tacked on the Seahawks final goal of the game off a Cameron Linger assist.
