Ashland, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team kicked off the spring portion of its season on the right foot as the Seahawks picked up a pair of non-conference victories Saturday.  St. Mary's (5-1) started the day with a 9-0 sweep of NCAA Division II Virginia Union University (0-1) before capping off the afternoon with a n 8-1 win over host Randolph-Macon College (1-2).

The two wins gave sixth-year men's and women's tennis head coach Derek Sabedra his 103rd overall tennis coaching victory as Sabedra owns a 54-47 record on the men's side and a 49-49 mark as the women's coach.  His 103 wins are five shy of breaking the all-time record of 107 held by the late Paul Spencer, who coached at St. Mary's from 1992 to 2000.

Sophomore Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) picked up his team-best ninth singles win with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Virginia Union's Charles Sheets at No. 1 singles before falling to Randolph-Macon's Mederick Ceril in straight sets (6-3, 6-1).  Gear now boasts a 27-2 career singles record to tie for sixth all-time with Andrew Beliveau '01 and Sam Barton '10.

Senior captain Thomas Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) won his fourth consecutive singles match to improve to 6-3 on the season, including a 4-0 mark at No. 3 singles.

Sophomore John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) has also won four in a row, including back-to-back triumphs at No. 5 singles this weekend.  Feighner is now 6-2 on the young season.

Sophomore J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) is on a three-match win streak following a 6-0, 6-2 win over Randolph-Macon's Joe Cox at No. 6 singles to improve to 7-2 on the year.

The doubles tandem of Gear and junior Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) are 4-0 in dual matches this season at No. 1 doubles following an 8-2 win at Virginia Union and a hard fought 8-5 triumph at Randolph-Macon.

Doubles partners Hoesman and junior Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) sport a 5-0 dual match record at No. 2 doubles and a team-best 6-1 doubles record.

The Seahawks will be idle until they head down to Hilton Head, South Carolina for their Spring Break trip.  In the sunny warmth of South Carolina, St. Mary's will face five opponents starting with Nazareth College on Monday, March 12 at noon and finishing with Messiah College on Friday, March 16 at 8:00 am.
