St. Mary's Women's Swimming Takes Home Victory Over Frostburg State

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team collected their first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's (2-3, 1-2 CAC) picked up a 136-126 victory over the Bobcats of Frostburg State University (8-3, 1-2 CAC) in dual meet action.

How It Happened

  • The Seahawks won seven events before swimming the 400 freestyle relay as an exhibition.
  • Sophomore Carolyn Sutton (Laurel, Md./Laurel) and senior captain Rachel Sonnenberg (Derwood, Md./Magruder) each finished with three wins to pace St. Mary's on the day.
  • Sutton, junior Hailley Baughman (Lineboro, Md./Manchester Valley), R. Sonnenberg, and first-year Anna LaPoint (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) started out the day by winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:16.80.
  • Junior Elizabeth Valenti (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) came up next in the 1,000 freestyle and took home first in 11.30.62. Valenti notched a second-place finish as well in the 500 freestyle in 5:41.06.
  • LaPoint also grabbed first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.71 while tallying a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 56.48.
  • The top spot in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events went to Sutton as she swam the 100 in 1:04.70 and the 200 in 2:20.52. She also added a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 26.27.
  • R. Sonnenberg also took home two individual first-place finishes in the 200 and 100 butterfly events. She swam a 2:25.29 in the 200 and a 1:03.80 in the 100. Her younger sister, sophomore Becca Sonnenberg (Derwood, Md./Magruder) finished in second place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:33.91.
  • Baughman picked up three second-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.65), the 200 breaststroke (2:35.24), and the 200 individual medley (2:27.88).
