Seahawk Women's Tennis Drops Close Decision to Bridgewater (Va.)
St. Mary's City, Md. – The non-conference match between the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team and Bridgewater (Va.) College came down to the outcome of the No. 4 singles match. Bridgewater survived the battle and pulled out a 5-4 victory Saturday afternoon.
Bridgewater (2-0) held a 4-3 advantage with two singles matches left to be played. Junior Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) got the best of senior Olivia Stone (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) in the first set with a 6-2 win. However, Stone rallied with 6-4, 6-1 victories to claim the win at No. 4 singles and secure the Eagles' second win of the season.
The Seahawks (3-5) had headed into singles action with a 2-1 lead as Stine and her partner, sophomore Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern), notched a 9-8 (7-4) win at No. 2 doubles and the duo of senior captain Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and first-year Anna Passaniti (White Hall, Md./Hereford) posted an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
First-year Emily Rost (Germantown, Md.) increased St. Mary's lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over senior Rita Murphy (Plymouth, Mass./Sacred Heart High). The Eagles then captured the next three singles matches, tallying wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles.
Sophomore Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) picked up the Seahawks' final point as Rost put up a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over junior Brittany Wilson (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage).
St. Mary's will be back in action on Friday, March 8 when the Seahawks travel to Chestertown, Maryland to face Washington College in non-conference action at 3:00 pm.
