St. Mary's Women's Cross Country Gains Hardware at Hood Invitational

Frederick, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's cross country team placed third out of 14 teams, including besting Frostburg State University, at the Hood College Invitational in Frederick on Saturday morning. This is the second consecutive season the Seahawks have taken third at Hood and the first top three finish of the season. St. Mary's won the event in its first appearance at the Hood Invitational in 2013.

Today's race marked the final regular-season competition for senior captains Grace Humphries (Lutherville, Md./Mercy) and Alex Schoen (Cabin John, Md./Walt Whitman).

The Basics:

  • Place – 3rd out of 14
  • Location – Utica Park – Frederick, Md.

St. Mary's Top 5 Finishers:

  • Sophomore Halcyon Ruskin (Kensington, Md./Albert Einstein) was the first Seahawk to cross the finish line on Saturday with a time of 25:27 for 22nd place.
  • Fellow classmate Marisa McCormick (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) would be the next Seahawk to cross the line with a time of 25:49 for 31st place.
  • Next to finish was first-year Sarah Jeffrey (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville)who finished 34th in 26:09.
  • First-year Nhu Chau (Elkridge, Md./Howard) came in 36th place with a time of 26:12.
  • Humphries rounded out the Seahawks' Top 5 with a time of 26:21 for 38th place.
  • Schoen was the sixth Seahawk to finish, placing 54th in her final race before the Capital Athletic Conference championships with a time of 27:36.

Other Top Finishers

  • Grove City College claimed the team title with 21 points, capturing five of the top 10 finishes.
  • Grove City's Lydia Keiper would win the race with a time of 22:41 followed by teammates Rachel Martin (23:19) and Heidi Hoffman (23:48) in second and third, respectively.

Up next for the Seahawks

  • The Seahawks have two weeks off before getting back on the road, travelling to the Hershey Entertainment Complex in Hershey, Pennsylvania for the CAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on October 29.
