Westminster, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team won five events in picking up a 52-43 non-conference win over McDaniel College Friday afternoon to end their four-meet losing streak. Senior captain Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and sophomore Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) each garnered two gold medals to pace the Seahawks in the win.
Petersen and Speer, along with junior Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) and first-year Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown), guided St. Mary's to a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:22.75).
Petersen grabbed an individual win in the 200 freestyle (1:50.16) while sophomore Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) finished third less than four seconds later.
Speer captured the 100 freestyle in 49.64 followed by Cope in third in 52.02.
Senior captain Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton) notched top honors in the 200 backstroke in 2:04.33 while sophomore Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown) came in third. Lilley earned an individual win of his own as he led a 1-2 finish in the 50 freestyle. Lilley won the event in 22.91, out-touching Cope by 0.08 seconds.
Walchuck recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 1000 freestyle (10:44.14) and the 500 freestyle (5:13.75) while sophomore Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) finished third twice in the 1000 freestyle and the 200 butterfly.
Forest added a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:04.82 while Burgess led the Seahawks in the 200 butterfly with a second-place finish in 2:04.13. Petersen placed second as well in the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.68.
St. Mary's will be back in action next Friday, November 22nd as the Seahawks return to Capital Athletic Conference action, hosting Frostburg State University at the Aquatics Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center at 6:30 pm.
