St. Mary's Men's Swimming Wins Home-Opener over Goucher

St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) won three gold medals as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team picked up a 119-86 non-conference victory over Goucher College in the Seahawks' home-opener Saturday afternoon.

Cope started the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle as he won the event in 1:52.70 while senior captain Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton) placed second in 1:56.99. Cope's second gold medal came in the 200 back as he and Forest notched another 1-2 punch. Cope captured the event in 2:05.43 followed by Forest less than a second later.

Cope was part of the winning 200 free relay as he joined forces with sophomore Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), Forest and sophomore Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) to claim the final event of the meet in 1:33.14.

Speer added to his 200 free relay medal with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.83 while sophomore Michael Abrams (Garrett Park, Md./Walter Johnson) took third in 53.16 and first-year Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood) was fourth (53.29).

Senior captain Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest) picked up a gold medal in the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.99 while senior Ryan Wilson (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) came in third in 2:32.11 and junior Ryan Reis (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) finished fourth (2:32.89).

Abrams, Wilson, sophomore Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson), and Braker led the Seahawks to a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:51.45. In the 1000 freestyle, sophomore Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) tallied a second-place finish in 10:30.68 followed by Karimi in third (11:22.62) and senior Jonathan Sheldon (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) in fourth (11:32.53).

Speer earned a silver medal in the 50 freestyle in 22.74 followed by Lilley in third in 23.17. Petersen and first-year Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) finished second and third, respectively, in both the 400 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.

Burgess earned his second silver of the day in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 2:03.92, while Karimi his second bronze of the day in 2:14.33.

The Seahawks (2-1) will be back in action at the Aquatics Center in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center on Friday, November 8 as they welcome Randolph-Macon College for a non-conference dual meet at 4:00 pm.
