St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team won all 11 events in picking up a convincing 159-43 non-conference victory over Goucher College in the Seahawks' home-opener Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's (2-1) swept three events while three Seahawks collected three gold medals apiece and three others each earned a pair of first-place finishes.
Senior captain Stefania D'Ambrosio (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was part of two winning relay teams. D'Ambrosio joined forces with sophomore Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur), senior captain Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill), and junior Monica Claro (Rockville, Md./St. John's College) for the win in the 200 medley relay (2:02.24).
D'Ambrosio was the lead-off swimmer on the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.92), winning the event with the help of juniors Brooke Raab (Parkton, Md./Hereford) and Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) and sophomore Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana).
D'Ambrosio earned an individual win in the 100 freestyle as she led the Seahawks' sweep of the event, winning in 58.20 followed by sophomore Katie Andersen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) in second (1:01.95) and Claro in third (1:04.40).
O'Connor posted an individual win in the 400 individual medley in 4:54.70 before claiming top honors in the 200 breaststroke in 2:37.31. Senior Claire Huckenpoehler (Towson, Md./Towson) finished third (2:51.31) behind O'Connor in the 200 breast while junior Mikaela Greer (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) took fourth (2:52.94).
Raab paced St. Mary's in a sweep of the 1000 freestyle as she touched the wall first in 11:15.70 followed by sophomore Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) in second (11:45.00) and senior Hanna Rizkallah (Frederick, Md./Urbana) in third (11:55.93). Raab and Kohles tallied a 1-2 punch in the 200 butterfly as Raab was first in 2:16.71 and Kohles second (2:28.35).
Kohles captured the 200 freestyle in 2:06.44 followed by Straight in second in 2:11.42 while McIlmail claimed the 50 freestyle in 26.55 followed by Andersen in second in 27.89. Straight guided the Seahawks to a sweep of the 200 backstroke, winning in 2:19.90, while McIlmail came in second (2:22.03) and junior Kaleigh O'Neill (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) was third (2:41.23).
Machlin earned a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:38.25 while Rizkallah was second in 5:42.07.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Friday, November 8th as they welcome Randolph-Macon College to the Aquatics Center in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center for a non-conference meet at 4:00 pm.
