St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team won all but one of the 11 events to garner an impressive 157-44 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Frostburg State University Friday night.
Senior captain Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest), junior Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral), and sophomore Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown) led the Seahawks to their second straight win as they each collected three gold medals.
St. Mary's notched a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay as the foursome of senior captain Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton), Petersen, Lilley, and Cope posted a winning time of 1:41.95. Petersen led a sweep of both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events as he captured the 50 free in 23.32 and the 100 free in 50.82.
The Seahawks claimed a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.34 behind the efforts of Cope, first-year Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown), Lilley, and sophomore Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield).
Lilley conducted a sweep of the 200 backstroke as he won the event in 2:09.19 followed by Walchuck in second just 0.67 seconds later and sophomore Michael Abrams (Garrett Park, Md./Walter Johnson) in third (2:17.18).
Cope was part of a 1-2-3 sweep of the 500 freestyle as he won the event in 5:11.84 followed by Speer in second (5:22.36) and first-year Andrew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) in third (5:37.21). Walchuck tallied a first-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:08.86.
Speer guided St. Mary's to a sweep of the 200 freestyle as he won the event in 1:54.30 while sophomore Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) came in second (2:01.37) and Braun took third (2:04.10). St. Mary's had a 1-2 punch in the 200 butterfly as Karimi took top honors in 2:11.42 and Forest was second in 2:15.08.
Sophomore Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) touched the wall first in the 1000 freestyle in 10:24.68 while senior Jon Sheldon (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) came in second in 11:11.44. Forest led the Seahawks in the 200 breaststroke with a second-place finish in 2:23.35.
St. Mary's (4-5, 2-1 CAC) will be back in action tomorrow as the Seahawks travel to Chestertown, Maryland to take on Washington College in a non-conference dual meet at 1:00 pm.
