St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team returned to the win column Friday night as the Seahawks posted a dominating 137-65 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Frostburg State University.
Senior captain Stefania D'Ambrosio (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), junior Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School), and sophomore Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) all collected three gold medals as St. Mary's won nine of 11 events, sweeping four of them.
The foursome of Straight, D'Ambrosio, and sophomores Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) and Katie Andersen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) claimed a win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:00.78.
Straight collected an individual win in the 50 freestyle, winning the event in 27.88, and then grabbed a second individual gold medal in the 200 butterfly in 2:36.49. Junior Mae Rukstalis (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) took third in the butterfly in 2:50.60.
Kohles paced the Seahawks in the 200 freestyle as she led a sweep of the event. Kohles won the event in 2:05.39 followed by senior Hanna Rizkallah (Frederick, Md./Urbana) in second (2:09.12) and first-year Samantha Liming (Silver Spring, Md./JFK) in third (2:14.57).
Kohles picked up another gold medal in the 100 freestyle in leading a sweep of that event as well. Kohles touched the wall first in 59.20 while senior captain Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) was only 0.05 seconds behind for second and Rizkallah came in third (1:00.71).
D'Ambrosio, Rizkallah, Kohles, and sophomore Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana) guided St. Mary's to a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.74. D'Ambrosio was part of the sweep of the 200 individual medley as she captured the event in 2:22.56 while McIlmail came in two seconds later in second place (2:24.66) and Machlin was third (2:29.00).
O'Connor took top honors in the 1000 freestyle in 11:02.66 while McIlmail led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 500 freestyle, claiming the event in 5:34.35 followed by Machlin in second (5:40.57) and Liming in third (6:00.66). Junior Mikaela Greer (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) recorded a pair of second-place finishes to lead the Seahawks in the 200 backstroke (2:39.74) and the 200 breaststroke (2:52.67).
St. Mary's (6-3, 3-0 CAC) will be back in action tomorrow as the Seahawks travel to Chestertown, Maryland to take on Washington College in a non-conference dual meet at 1:00 pm.
