Chestertown, Md. – Sophomore Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) garnered the team's only gold medal as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team saw their two-meet streak ended by a 129-74 non-conference loss at Washington College Saturday afternoon.
Speer picked up his gold medal in the fourth event of the meet as he claimed top honors in the 50 freestyle in 22.77. Sophomore Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown) notched a second-place finish in the event in 23.00.
Speer also tallied a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 49.31 as Washington College's Brent Longenecker out-touched him by 0.03 seconds. Speer was part of the second-place 200 freestyle relay as he joined forces with junior Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral), senior captain Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton), and Lilley to post a time of 1:33.29.
Sophomore Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) collected a pair of second-place finishes for the Seahawks. Burgess garnered a second-place finish in the 1000 freestyle in 10:24.69 while gaining a silver medal in the 100 butterfly in 56.55.
Senior captain Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest) led the Seahawks to a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:07.75 while first-year Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) placed third (5:08.72). Walchuck started the meet with a silver medal in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.10.
Petersen added a pair of bronze medals to his count with third-place finishes in the 400 individual medley (4:33.98) and the 100 breaststroke (1:03.29).
The foursome of sophomore Michael Abrams (Garrett Park, Md./Walter Johnson), senior Ryan Wilson (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford), sophomore Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson), and first-year Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood) collected a bronze in the 200 medley relay in 1:52.75.
Forest led St. Mary's in the 100 backstroke with a third-place finish in 57.27 while Lilley was fourth (58.51).
St. Mary's (4-6) will be back in action in two weeks when the Seahawks travel to Richmond, Virginia to compete at the two-day Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon College at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center on December 6-7.
