St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team welcomed fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center for their first dual meet of 2014 on Friday.
Johns Hopkins (5-0) went on to post a 174-64 non-conference win over the Seahawks (4-7) in today's long-course (50m) meet. The Blue Jays captured the first 11 events before going exhibition in the 200 individual medley and the 200 freestyle relay.
Junior Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) picked up the team's highest individual finish with a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.04.
Cope, senior captain Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest), sophomore Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston), and first-year Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) joined forces to claim St. Mary's second third-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:59.39.
Petersen earned a fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 57.62 while Forest placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.00.
Walchuck notched a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 2:11.26 while senior captain Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton) tallied a fifth-place finish in the 50 backstroke in 31 seconds flat.
Senior Ryan Wilson (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) came in fifth in the 50 breaststroke while Burgess was fifth in the 100 butterfly.
Junior Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took fifth-place finishes in both the 50 freestyle and the 50 butterfly (28.71) while Burgess went fifth in the 400 freestyle in 4:32.37.
St. Mary's will be back in action tomorrow when the Seahawks return to Capital Athletic Conference action at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The meet is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
