Ashland, Va. – Senior captain Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and junior Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) each picked up a win as St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swimming dropped its first dual meet of the season on Friday. The Seahawks (2-1) dropped a 113-87 decision at Randolph-Macon College (1-1) in non-conference action.
Witkop earned a win in the 100 butterfly in 55.20 while Burgess touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle in 5:00.06.
The foursome of junior Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), first-year Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep), Witkop, and sophomore Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood) tallied a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.32.
First-year Max Madden (Cape St. Clair, Md./Broadneck) came in second in a close race in the 1,000 freestyle. Madden touched the wall in 10:23.34, finishing just .12 seconds behind R-MC's Preston Edwards.
Braker took second in the 50 freestyle in 23.29 while sophomore Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) placed second in the 200 individual medley in 2:03.98. Lilley had a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 56.98 while Broder finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.47.
The Seahawks claimed another second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.50 behind the efforts of Braker, Lilley, Witkop, and junior Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield).
Speer collected a pair of third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:52.21), missing second by .12 seconds, and the 100 freestyle (49.59). Walchuck finished fourth behind Speer in the 100 free with a time of 49.72.
St. Mary's has a quick turnaround as the Seahawks return to action on Saturday, November 8th at the quad meet hosted by York College of Pennsylvania with Dickinson College and St. Vincent College. The meet starts at 1:00 p.m.
