Seahawk Men's Swimming Competes at York Quad Meet

York, Pa. – Sophomore Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) picked up a win in the 200 freestyle as St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swimming competed at the quad meet at York College of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks (2-4, 1-1 CAC) fell 109-95 to St. Vincent College (3-2), lost 112-92 to York (5-1, 2-1 CAC), and dropped a 127-77 decision to Dickinson College (3-2).

Walchuck captured the 200 freestyle in 1:48.80 while junior Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) claimed a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 49.25.

The Seahawks gave Dickinson a run for its money in the 400 freestyle relay, finishing second in 3:18.89 which 1.35 seconds behind the Red Devils. Swimming on the relay were Walchuck, sophomore Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood), senior captain Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and Speer.

The foursome of junior Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), first-year Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep), junior Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston), and Speer took third in the 400 medley relay in 3:44.71.

Burgess guided the Seahawks in the 1,000 freestyle with a third-place finish in 10:22.01 while first-year Max Madden (Cape St. Clair, Md./Broadneck) placed sixth in 10:38.75. Witkop earned a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:06.65.

Burgess notched another third-place finish in the 200 butterfly in 2:02.47 while junior Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) tallied a sixth-place finish in 2:08.05 followed by Witkop .64 seconds later in seventh. Walchuck came in third in the 500 freestyle in 4:59.31 while Madden touched the wall in 5:08.81 for seventh.

In the 50 freestyle, Lilley finished fourth in 23.34 while taking fifth in the 200 backstroke in 2:07.98. Sophomore Andrew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) came in eighth in the 200 back in 2:15.06. Broder had the team's highest finish in the 200 breaststroke with a ninth-place finish in 2:25.20.

St. Mary's will return poolside next Saturday, November 15th as the Seahawks travel to Western Maryland to compete in a tri-meet hosted by Frostburg State University with West Virginia University Institute of Technology. The meet starts at 1:00 p.m.
