St. Mary's City, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swimming (5-3, 3-0 CAC) swam strong today and trampled the Frostburg State University Bobcats (3-8, 0-3 CAC), 190-72, in a Capital Athletic dual meet on Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks secured 10 gold medals for today's dual meet win.
Senior captain Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown) was able to bring home four gold medals for the Seahawks. Lilley placed first in the 100 backstroke (56:40), the 200 backstroke (2:05.14), the 100 butterfly (56.47), and was the lead-off swimmer on the winning 200 medley relay (1:42.05) with sophomore Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep), senior captain Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston), and first-year Colin Cassady (Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall).
Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) also brought home three individual gold medals. He swam 40 lengths at 10:13.79, putting him in first place for the 1,000 freestyle. Burgess also placed first in the 200 butterfly (2:00.82) and the 200 individual medley with a final time of 2:03.48.
Seahawk junior Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) excelled in the 200 freestyle (1:47.35) and the 500 freestyle (5:02.73) while finishing second in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.36). He was the lead-off swimmer on the gold medal winning 200 freestyle relay with senior captain Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), junior Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood), and Cassady while Cassady had the fastest split at 22.11.
Speer picked up an individual gold medal in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.38.
Broder paced St. Mary's in the 100 breaststroke with a second-place finish in 1:03.01 and added another silver medal in the 200 individual medley (2:10.15) while Cassady contributed two silver medals in the 50 freestyle (22.59) and the 100 freestyle (49.90).
The St. Mary's men's swim team will be back in action on Friday, November 20 in a non-conference dual meet at McDaniel College at 4:00 p.m.
