St. Mary's Women's Swimming Defeats Frostburg State

St. Mary's City, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swimming (4-4, 2-1 CAC) defeated Frostburg State University (5-6, 0-3 CAC), 169-91, in Saturday's Capital Athletic Conference dual meet. The Seahawks took home nine gold medals to propel them to a significant lead against Frostburg State.

St. Mary's started its winning momentum early in the meet by capturing the 200 medley relay (1:55.98) behind the efforts of senior captain Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur), first-year Hailley Baughman (Lineboro, Md./Manchester Valley), senior captain Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) and sophomore Elizabeth Straathof (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson).

Machlin brought home two gold medals in the 200 butterfly (2:18.76) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.44) events. She also captured the bronze medal in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:04.77.

Straight took two first-place honors for the Seahawks as well. She claimed first place in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 1:04.95, and in the 200 backstroke (2:20.33).

Senior captain Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana) snagged an individual gold medal in the 1,000 freestyle (11:30.39). McIlmail also staked second-place honors in the 100 freestyle (56.47) and in the 200 individual medley (2:23.42).

McIlmail also anchored the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.83) which collected another gold medal for the Seahawks to end the meet. She joined forces with Straathof, senior Katie Anderson (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), and first-year Samantha Schoenecker (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson).

St. Mary's first-year Elizabeth Valenti (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) registered a pair of gold medal wins. Valenti took the lead in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:37.58 and then followed that up with top honors in the 200 individual medley (2:03.48).

Straathof collected two silver medals in the 200 freestyle (2:03.03) and the 50 freestyle (26.48) while Baughman was the team's top finisher in the 100 breaststroke, placing second in 1:12.87, and the 200 breaststroke, taking second in 2:42.10.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Friday, November 20 in a non-conference dual meet at McDaniel College at 4:00 p.m.
