Westminster, Md. – Three Seahawks each collected two wins in leading St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swimming to their second straight victory, handing host McDaniel College a 55-40 setback on Friday night.
The Seahawks (6-3) fell behind early as McDaniel (0-4) staked a 15-10 advantage after the first three events. However, first-year Colin Cassady (Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall) led a 1-2 finish in the 50 freestyle to give St. Mary's an 18-16 lead, which the Seahawks never relinquished. Cassady captured the event in 22.75 followed by Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood) in second (23.09).
Senior captain Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) earned a gold medal in the 150 freestyle with a time of 1:19.00 while senior captain Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) came in third (1:20.93).
Junior Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) touched the wall first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:00.01 while sophomore Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep) placed third in 2:09.50. Walchuck picked up his second gold medal in the 100 freestyle in 49.05 followed by Speer in second (49.95).
Cassady, senior captain Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), Braker, and Speer put in a solid performance in winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:29.97.
Sophomore Max Madden (Cape St. Clair, Md./Broadneck) paced the Seahawks in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:44.36 while junior Andrew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) finished third (11:24.42). Burgess nabbed a silver medal in the 150 butterfly in 1:27.82 followed by senior Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) in third (1:29.80).
Lilley led St. Mary's in the 150 backstroke with a second-place finish (1:28.89) while senior Michael Abrams (Garrett Park, Md./Walter Johnson) took third (1:38.31). Burgess added another silver medal in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.74 while Madden finished third (5:14.31).
In the 150 breaststroke, Walchuck tallied a second-place finish in 1:40.96 while Broder was third in 1:42.99.
The Seahawks will be back at it tomorrow, Saturday, November 21 as they welcome SUNY Delhi to St. Mary's for a non-conference dual meet at 12:00 p.m.
