Seahawk Women's Swimming Holds off Randolph-Macon

St. Mary's City, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swimming earned its second win of the season Friday evening as the Seahawks (2-1) posted a 109-96 non-conference victory over Randolph-Macon College (0-3).

St. Mary's captured eight of 11 events as eight different Seahawks earned at least one gold medal. Senior captain Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and sophomore Elizabeth Straathof (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) led the way with three wins each for St. Mary's.

It was another close match for the Seahawks as they only held a one-point lead with two events left. The team rallied, tallying a 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke and winning the 200 freestyle relay to put the meet out of reach of Randolph-Macon.

McIlmail started the meet by winning the 200 individual medley (2:21.06) and followed up with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (56.07). She finished the meet by leading off the winning 200 freestyle relay. Straathof's performance on the day included anchoring both winning relays and touching the wall first in the 50 freestyle (25.53).

Senior captain Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) added two gold medals as Machlin was on the winning 200 medley relay and won the 200 freestyle (2:01.48). She picked up a second-place finish as well in the 500 freestyle (5:27.92).

Senior captain Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) led off the winning 200 medley relay while adding a silver medal in the 100 backstroke (1:04.84) and a bronze medal in the 200 IM (2:23.74).

First-year Elizabeth Valenti (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) notched second-place finishes in the 1000 freestyle (11:24.53) and in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.36) before swimming on the winning 200 freestyle relay.
