St. Mary's Women's Swimming Splits Double-Dual Meet

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team (1-6) battled with McDaniel College (2-3) and Ferrum College (3-8) Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Seahawks would beat Ferrum but fall to McDaniel.

How It Happened

- Sophomore Elizabeth Valenti (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) would earn two gold medals for the Seahawks in the 800 freestyle with a time of 9:00.76 and the 400 freestyle, lapping opponents in 4:28.51.

- The Seahawks would place first in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:55.59 behind the efforts of sophomore Rachel Yates (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island), first-year Carolyn Sutton (Laurel, Md./Laurel), sophomore Samantha Schoenecker (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson), and senior captain Lizzie Straathof (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson).

- Straathof would also have a strong showing for the Seahawks, earning a pair of silver medals in the 50 freestyle (26.13) and the 100 freestyle (57.11).

- Sophomore Hailley Baughman (Lineboro, Md./Manchester Valley) would earn four points for the Seahawks with a silver medal in the 150 breaststroke in 1:54.85. Baughman would also take fourth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:28.52 followed by senior captain Samantha Liming (Silver Spring, Md./JFK) who clocked a 2:30.78 for fifth.

- Junior captain Rachel Sonnenberg (Derwood, Md./Magruder) took second in the 150 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:45.02. Sutton would follow closely behind for third in 1:45.62 while first-year Becca Sonnenberg (Derwood, Md./Magruder) placed fourth in 1:50.32.

- St. Mary's started the meet with a third-place finish in the 400 medley relay as first-year Angela Ross (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall), Baughman, R. Sonnenberg, andSchoenecker swam a 4:25.28.

- R. Sonnenberg garnered another bronze medal in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:11.68 followed by junior Emma Green (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) in fourth in 2:13.20.

- Ross paced the Seahawks in the 150 backstroke with a third-place finish in 1:46.67 followed by Green in fourth (1:51.39).

Up Next for the Seahawks

The Seahawks will travel to Chesterfield, Va. to compete in the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon College on Dec. 2-3.
