Seahawk Men's Swimming Battles Hard at Randolph-Macon

Ashland, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team would battle in a close non-conference meet, falling on the road to Randolph-Macon College, 103-97, on Friday evening as the meet came down to the 200 freestyle relay.

How It Happened

- St. Mary's headed into the final event with a 93-90 lead after reclaiming the upper-hand in the seventh event, the 100 freestyle, as senior captain Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) captured the 100 free and the Seahawks claimed 13 points for just their second lead of the meet.
- Randolph-Macon would go on to win the 200 free relay and also take third in the event for 13 points, edging the Seahawks for the dual meet victory.
- St. Mary's would take home five gold medals.
- Walchuck would take the lead for the Seahawks, contributing three gold medals on the day. He would place first in the 200 freestyle (1:46.41), the 100 freestyle (48.77), and the 500 freestyle (5:01.39).
- The first gold medal of the meet would be earned by senior captain Andrew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) in the 1,000 freestyle, finishing the long stretch in 10:44.57.
- Sophomore Colin Cassady (Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall) would capture nine points for the Seahawks in the 50 freestyle, clocking a time of 22.23 for first place.
- St. Mary's picked up a silver medal in the 200 medley with a time of 1:41.75. The relay featured first-year Peter Orban (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill), junior Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep), first-year Ryan Akhavan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), and senior captain Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood).
- Broder collected two more silver medals for the Seahawks in the 200 individual medley (2:08.69) and the 200 breaststroke (2:17.08).
- Akhavan added his second second-place finish of the meet in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 2:09.10, while junior Lucas Delgado (Bowie, Md./Gonzaga [D.C.]) finished third (2:09.18).
- Orban would receive another silver medal in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.88 while Braker took third (2:06.02).
- St. Mary's would earn its fifth silver of the day in the 200 free relay as Cassady, sophomore Reed Rhoads (Westminster, Md./Winter Mills), Braker, and Delgado finished in 1:31.31, less than two seconds behind the winning Randolph-Macon relay team (1:29.71).

Up Next for the Seahawks

- The Seahawks will host York College of Pennsylvania (2-0, 1-0 CAC) tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the Aquatics Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center. Tomorrow's dual meet will be St. Mary's second Capital Athletic Conference meet of the season.
