Seahawks Women’s Swimming Sweeps Atlantic East Quad Meet

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team, the defending Atlantic East Conference champions, opened up defense of their 2020-21 title with three victories Saturday afternoon at the Aquatics Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center.
 
The Seahawks (3-1, 3-0 AEC) took down Cabrini University (2-2, 1-2 AEC), 116-81, Immaculata University (0-5, 0-3 AEC), 139-44, and Marymount (Va.) University (2-4, 2-1 AEC), 117-82. St. Mary's College was led by senior Leila McCloskey (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and junior Christina Trnkus (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) as McCloskey and Trnkus each notched three wins.
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks began the meet by winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:56.80 behind the efforts of senior captain Rileigh Krell (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point), sophomore Anna Kidd (Arbutus, Md./Mount de Sales), Trnkus, and senior Christina Bonass (Chestertown, Md./Kent County).
  • Trnkus' second victory came in the 100 butterfly as she touched the wall first in 1:02.69. Krell came up third in the same event in 1:05.16.
  • McCloskey and Trnkus then swam the first two legs, respectively, of the winning 200 freestyle relay as junior Jazlyn Benitez (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and Bonass joined them in clocking a 1:48.72.
  • McCloskey's two other wins came in the 50 freestyle as she went 26.40 for top honors before winning the 100 backstroke in 1:05.14. Krell also swam in the 100 backstroke and picked up a third-place finish in 1:05.61.
  • Kidd finished with two wins on the day after capturing the 200 individual medley in 2:17.57 while senior captain Bailey Edgren (Canton, Conn./Canton) placed third in 2:31.62.
  • Kidd also earned a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke while Edgren came in fifth in 1:16.04.
  • First-year Gabby DeCrisci (Fredericksburg, Va.) grabbed a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:02.30 followed by Bonass in third in 1:02.89.
  • DeCrisci also added a third-place finish in the 1000 freestyle in 12:26.56 to lead the Seahawks.
  • Edgren led St. Mary's College in the 200 freestyle with a third-place finish in 2:14.35 while first-year Emma Grimm (Derwood, Md./Magruder) followed in fourth in 2:15.54.
  • Sophomore Julia Milner (Middletown, Md./Middletown) posted a fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 6:23.69.
