Gussio Records Career Day to Lead #22 Seahawks Past Meredith

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The #22 St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team (6-3, 2-3 C2C) hosted the Meredith College Avenging Angels (8-2, 5-0 USA South) on Sunday (Apr. 11) afternoon in non-conference action. Lucy Gussio recorded a career-best eight points to lead the Seahawks to a 15-6 victory over the Avenging Angels.

How It Happened
  • The Seahawks grabbed the lead first with back-to-back goals from Lucy Gussio for a 2-0 advantage. Meredith responded with a goal at the 21:47 mark to cut the Seahawk lead in half, but St. Mary's College quickly responded when Gussio recorded her third goal of the half. 
  • St. Mary's College began to pull away from the Avenging Angels with a three-goal run to extend their lead to four. Meredith finished the opening half strong with a goal with 24 seconds remaining and the Seahawks held a 6-3 lead at halftime. 
  • The Seahawks captured the momentum to open up the second half with a three-goal run to extend their lead to 9-3. Kelly Emge, Gussio, and MC Mortimer tallied unassisted goals during the run. Meredith answered with back-to-back scores to cut the Seahawk lead to four, but the Seahawks responded with a four-goal run to take a comfortable 13-5 lead. Nancy Slaughter scored three times in the scoring streak, while Gussio added her fifth goal of the contest.
  • Meredith added their sixth and final score with 2:34 remaining in regulation, but the Seahawks tacked on two more goals to end the contest. Camryn Gentner recorded her first career goal as a Seahawk and Annalise Wrobel netted her first goal of the season to close out the victory.
Inside the Box Score
  • As mentioned earlier, Gussio led the Seahawks on the offensive end with five goals and three assists for a career-high eight points. Emge followed with three goals and one assist, respectively.
  • Defensively, Stephanie Heffron, Mark Kate Fitz-Patrick, and Rachael Freeman tied for the team-lead with two caused turnovers each. Freeman, Aimee Uibel, and Erin Piper led the Seahawks with three ground balls apiece. Heffron collected a team-high six draw controls. In goal, Uibel tallied five saves. 
  • Olivia Blake, Jessica Dowdy, and Arrianna May led Meredith with two points each.
