Seahawks Women’s Swimming Splits Season-Opening Double-Dual Meet

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team opened the 2023-24 campaign Saturday afternoon (Oct. 14) with a non-conference split. St. Mary's College (1-1) notched a 113-91 victory over Randolph College (2-2) but fell 128-74 to host Virginia Wesleyan University (2-0).

How It Happened
  • The Seahawks began the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay, touching the wall in 1:57.51 behind the efforts of first-year Emerson Young (Bel Air, Md./Harford Technical), senior Kate Holland (Rockville, Md./Rockville), first-year Kelsie Miller (Potomac, Md./Churchill), and senior captain Marissa Fields (Leonardtown, Md./Chopticon).
 
  • Miller added a second win in her collegiate debut with a winning time of 2:04.34 in the 200 freestyle before leading a 1-2 finish in 100 butterfly. Miller won the event in 1:00.97 followed by Young in second in 1:03.21.
 
  • Young tacked on a second win in the 50 freestyle as she clocked a first-place time of 24.90.
 
  • In the 1000 freestyle, sophomore Venus Kai Judge (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) earned a second-place finish as a last-minute sub, posting a personal-best time of 12:58.26. Sophomore Bella Ramirez (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) also scored points for St. Mary's in the 1000 free with a third-place finish in 13:09.57.
 
  • Holland picked up a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.94.
 
  • Fields finished in third place in the 100 backstroke 1:08.85.
 
  • Other individual highlights included fifth-place finishes by first-year Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex Academy) in the 100 freestyle (1:01.59), senior Lilianna Bowman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) in the 500 freestyle (6:30.93), and Ramirez in the 200 individual medley (2:40.27).
 
  • St. Mary's closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-freestyle relay in 1:51.94. The relay was comprised of Fields, Elling, Holland, and Judge.
