Seahawks Men’s Swimming Edges Randolph-Macon by One Point

ASHLAND, Va. – Friday night's (Oct. 27) dual meet between the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team and host Randolph-Macon College came down to the wire as St. Mary's College entered the final event of the night down four points. The Seahawks (3-0) dominated the 200-freestyle relay to post a 103-102 come-from-behind win over Randolph-Macon (0-2).
 
Sophomore Robert Shively (Potomac, Md./Walt Whitman) paced St. Mary's in the win with three individual wins while junior captain Luke Schwenk (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) collected two individual wins and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay.
 
How It Happened
  • The foursome of Schwenk, senior captain Sam Shenot (Upper Marlboro, Md./Leonardtown), Sophomore William Kendrick (Laurel, Md./DeMatha Catholic), and first-year Anthony Davis (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) posted a winning time of 1:29.20, clearing Randolph-Macon by 4.13 seconds and notching 11 points to overcome a 96-92 deficit.
  • Shively picked up a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.13 before claiming top honors in the 500 freestyle in 5:08.74. With just three minutes rest, he then touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly in 54.38.
  • Sophomore Jair Jackson (Laurel, Md./Chapelgate Christian) led a 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke as Jackson won the event in 1:02.37 followed by first-year Kyle Smith (Crofton, Md./Crofton) in second place with a time of 1:03.68.
  • Schwenk led back-to-back 1-2 finishes in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. In the 50 free, Schwenk swam a 20.96 for first place followed by Davis in second in 22.64. Then Schwenk captured the 100 free in 47.12 followed by Shenot in second in 51.75.
  • Kendrick, Smith, Shenot, and Davis recorded a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay in 1:42.42.
  • First-year CB Jurado (Odenton, Md./Arundel) paced the team in the 1,000 freestyle, finishing second with a time of 11:26.66.
  • First-year Luca Fairbank (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) placed third in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.68.
  • Jackson finished his evening with a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:12.09.
