St. Mary’s College Women’s Lacrosse Holds on for Win over Randolph-Macon

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team rebounded from Sunday's loss with a hard-fought non-conference win Saturday afternoon (Mar. 4). Sophomores Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) each notched four goals as St. Mary's College (3-1) withstood a second-half rally and came away with a 17-14 triumph over the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets (2-3).
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks came out of the starting gate firing, scoring four straight in the first six minutes. Randolph-Macon got on the scoreboard with 6:56 left in the first quarter before the hosts added two more for a 6-2 lead heading into the second frame.
  • Each team put up two goals in the second period, including the Yellow Jackets netting one with 1.6 seconds on the clock, and St. Mary's went into halftime with an 8-4 advantage.
  • St. Mary's opened the second half with a 4-1 run to stake a 12-5 lead with 8:07 remaining in the third. Four different Seahawks scored in the run.
  • The Yellow Jackets went on the offensive over the next seven minutes with a 6-0 run, ending the third stanza with five unanswered, including two goals in 26 seconds, and scoring the first of the fourth to pull within 12-11 with 14:02 remaining in the game.
  • St. Mary's won the ensuing draw and found its offensive rhythm once again, scoring five of the next six goals to boast a five-goal cushion (17-12) with 3:15 to go.

  • Junior goalie Maddie Clemmer (Middletown, Md./Middletown) made six stops for the Seahawks.
 
Randolph-Macon Game Notes
  • Rianna Lowery paced the Yellow Jackets with a game-best six points on four goals and two assists while Italia Carnazza hauled in a game-high 12 draw controls.
  • Emma Taylor came up with 10 saves and four ground balls in R-MC's second straight loss.
