Seahawks Women’s Lacrosse Closes Out Regular Season with Third Straight Win

AURORA, N.Y. – Attackers Bella Dunigan (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) and Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) put up career numbers to lead the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to their 10th win of the season Saturday morning (April 29). St. Mary's College (10-7, 5-0 UEC) cruised to a 23-1 road win over Wells College (2-8, 0-4 UEC) in the regular-season finale for the Seahawks.
 
St. Mary's, who will serve as the host site for the 2023 United East Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament as the No. 1 seed on May 5-6, will face No. 4 seed Lancaster Bible College (3-11) in the first semifinal game on Friday, May 5, while No. 2 seed SUNY Morrisville (7-8) will take on No. 3 seed Mount Aloysius College (4-7) in the second semifinal matchup.
 
The two winners will then meet in the championship game on Saturday, May 6, at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. Game times for all three games will be announced next week.
 
Tickets will be $5 for adults; $3 for senior citizens, children 6-18, and non-SMCM students; Free for SMCM faculty, staff, and students and children under 5. No re-entry allowed.
 
How It Happened
  • The two head coaches agreed prior to the start of the game to call the game after the third period.
  • St. Mary's rolled out to an 11-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
  • The Seahawks tacked on six more for a 17-0 halftime advantage.
  • The visiting defense kept Wells off the scoreboard for 34:41 until Clara Lima fired one past junior goalie Maddie Clemmer (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) to avoid the shutout loss.
  • Sophomore attacker Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) scored two of the team's final four goals while Dunigan assisted on two.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Seahawks registered 36 shots to Wells' six while posting a +7-turnover margin as St. Mary's did not commit a single turnover and the defense forced four of the Express' seven miscues.
  • St. Mary's edged the hosts, 10-8, in ground balls while Scala's season- and career-best 11 draw controls helped the Seahawks win 16 of 26 draws.

  • Along with her 11 draws, Scala contributed season- and career-bests of three goals, four assists, and seven points.
  • Dunigan tallied season- and career-bests of five goals, four assists, nine points, and three ground balls while Betch finished the game with five goals, six points and five draw controls.
  • Senior attacker Erin Carmody (Olney, Md./Sherwood) matched her career-high of four goals and ended with five points on the day.
  • Junior captain MC Mortimer (Baltimore, Md./Friends) led the defensive effort with a season-best three caused turnovers.
  • Clemmer needed just three stops for her 10th win in goal.

  • Olivia Garcia earned all 10 of the Express' draw controls while Kayla Growth turned away seven shots.
