Seahawks Women’s Swimming Notches Two Conference-Opening Wins

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swimming opened Atlantic East Conference action Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9) with a pair of comprehensive wins. St. Mary's College (5-3, 2-0 AEC) handed Gallaudet University (0-7, 0-4 AEC) a 198-28 setback while posting a 154-93 victory over Marywood University (4-4, 1-1 AEC).
 
Sophomore Kelsie Miller (Potomac, Md./Churchill) collected three individual wins to lead the Seahawks while junior captain Venus Kai Judge (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and sophomore Emerson Young (Bel Air, Md./Harford Technical) each notched two of their own. In all, SMCM captured 11 of 14 events.
 
Miller began her afternoon with a first-place finish in the 200-freestyle in 2:04.80. She then followed by touching the wall first in the 200-backstroke in 2:22.33. Miller wrapped up the meet with top honors in the 100-butterfly in 1:00.72.
 
Young started her day by swimming the third leg of the first-place 200-medley relay as she joined first-year Addison Willey (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills), Judge, and first-year Mandy Cartwright (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) in clocking a 2:01.43.
 
Young continued by posting a season-best time of 25.28 to claim the 50-freestyle win. She registered another season-best time in her next event, going 55.20 to win the 100-freestyle. Her day concluded by anchoring the victorious 200-freestyle relay in 1:47.61 alongside Willey, Cartwright, and first-year Lauren Goulet (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis).
 
Judge won the 200-butterfly in 2:27.09 before touching the wall first in the 400-individual medley in 4:58.21. Willey led St. Mary's College with a win in the 100-backstroke in 1:07:21 followed by sophomore Kaitlyn Soldon (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) in third in 1:10.48.
 
Goulet notched a winning time of 5:50.06 in the 500-freestyle after finishing second in the 1000-freestyle in 11:54.31. First-year Ella Malzahn (Durham, N.C./Jordan) paced the Seahawks in both breaststroke events as Malzahn came in second in the 200-breaststroke in 2:56.03 after taking third in the 100-breaststroke in 1:19.35.
 
Soldon added a career-best time of 2:26.76 for second place in the 200-backstroke.
