St. Mary’s College Women’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 3 Franklin & Marshall

LANCASTER, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team concluded their 2024 campaign Sunday afternoon (May 12) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. St. Mary's College (12-7) dropped a 19-7 decision to No. 3 Franklin & Marshall College (17-3) at Shadek Stadium on F&M's campus.


 
How It Happened
  • F&M rolled out to a 4-0 lead at 11:27 as Lauren Pittman found the back of the net twice. Following a timeout, the Seahawks fired their first shot of the game at 10:44 off the stick of junior attacker Ella Baynes (Baltimore, Md./Catholic HS). Lydia Cassilly scored her second of the game on a free position shot at 8:06 to stretch the Diplomat lead to 5-0.
  • First-year midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex) notched the first SMCM goal at 2:25, finishing off a feed from sophomore attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales).
 
  • Franklin & Marshall grew its lead to 7-1 at 13:43 before St. Mary's College worked the deficit back down to four at 10:32 with back-to-back goals by Scala and junior attacker Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). Lane Lambeth helped the Diplomats enjoy their biggest lead of the first half, 10-3, with 1:12 left in the half as Lambeth scored two of F&M's last three goals.
  • Baynes sent the Seahawks in halftime down six as she turned an Elling pass in her 21st goal of the season. SMCM did have a goal called back at 4:49 due to a crease violation.
 
  • The Dips broke the game wide open with a seven-goal third quarter while shutting out St. Mary's College for 15 minutes and putting the running clock in motion.
 
  • Junior midfielder Madison Laine (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) snapped the Seahawks' scoring drought with an unassisted goal at 13:26 of the fourth period. Franklin & Marshall scored twice in a three-minute span to push its lead to 14 with 5:28 remaining in the game.
  • SMCM got two back in the final four minutes of the game as Betch and senior captain MC Mortimer (Baltimore, Md./Friends) both scored.

Inside the Box Score
  • St. Mary's College outhustled the hosts, 24-18, in ground balls as senior captain Rachael Freeman (Baltimore, Md./Friends) and first-year defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) both scooped up a game- and team-best four grounders.
  • The Diplomats posted a 41-25 advantage in shots while dominating the draw controls by a 23-5 margin.
  • F&M's full-field press tripped up the Seahawks in their transition game and they finished the game, 15-of-23, in their clears.
  • SMCM went 0-for-5 in free-position shots while the Dips were 2-of-9.
 
St. Mary's College Game Notes
  • Betch finished the game as the offensive leader with two goals while Scala, Baynes, and Elling all chipped in a goal and an assist.
  • Senior attacker Bella Dunigan (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) handed out two apples.
  • Scala earned three draw controls while Laine picked up two caused turnovers.
  • First-year Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) notched career-highs of 16 saves and three ground balls.
 
Franklin & Marshall Game Notes
  • Cassilly led the way for the Diplomats with game-highs of seven points on four goals and three assists while Lambeth finished with four goals as well.
  • The three F&M goalies combined for eight saves in the team's fifth consecutive victory.
