Seahawks Men’s Tennis Drops Non-Conference Match to Marymount (Va.)

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team played their second dual match of the season Friday evening (Oct. 10). St. Mary's College (0-2) suffered its second loss of the year, falling 6-1 to Marymount (Va.) University (2-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
  • Marymount claimed victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead into singles action.
  • The Seahawks avoided the sweep as senior Max Esztergomi (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and first-year Aidan Cron (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) notched a 6-3 triumph at the second flight over Joaquin Sigala and Gunek Singh.

SINGLES
  • The Saints went up 2-0 before SMCM pulled within one when sophomore Jacob Nelson (Olney, Md./Sherwood) tallied a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Rebhi Villasmil at No. 2 singles.
  • Sophomore Alex Lyman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) battled at the third flight against Singh, winning the first set, 6-3, before a 6-3 setback in the second set. Singh outlasted Lyman, 7-5, in the tiebreaker to give Marymount a 3-1 lead.
  • The visitors captured No. 6 and No. 1 singles for a 5-1 advantage despite Esztergomi taking Eshan Degamwar to three sets at the first flight, 6-4, 4-6, 4-6.
  • Cron put up quite the fight against Sigala at No. 4 singles. Sigala edged Cron, 7-6 (7-3), before Cron rebounded with a 6-4 triumph in the second set. Sigala then responded with a 10-5 win in the super tiebreaker to wrap up the Saints' 6-1 victory.
