Smoot Leads St. Mary’s College Men’s Cross Country at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional

NEWVILLE, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team wrapped up their 2025 campaign at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships Saturday morning (Nov. 15). The regional championship was held at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pa.
 
St. Mary's College tied for 24th with Stevenson University in the 31-team field with 757 points.
 
How It Happened
  • In his regional championship debut, first-year Brandon Smoot (Hanover, Md./DeMatha) clocked a 28:32.35 in finishing the 8K course to place 115th out of 219 runners.
  • Sophomore Blake Carberry (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) notched a career-best 152nd-place finish in 30:00.46. Carberry's placement this year is a 22-spot improvement from his 174th-place finish as a first year.
  • Sophomore Jack Kuta (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) was the third Seahawk to cross the finish line, placing 169th in 30:39.07. This was a 12-spot jump for Kuta from his 181st finish last year.
  • Junior Noah Fisher (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) posted a career-best as Fisher came in 175th in 30:59.57, a six-spot improvement from his 184th finish as a first year in 2023.
  • Sophomore Owen Swisdak (Sykesville, Md./Century) was also competing in his first NCAA Regional Championship. Swisdak rounded out the top five scorers for SMCM as he ran a 31:15.27 for 178th-place finish.
 
Inside the Race
  • No. 3 Johns Hopkins University claimed the program's third NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship title (2013, 2016, 2025).
  • Kenny Wanlass '27 captured the individual regional title as Wanlass tallied a 25:16.80 for the win.
