St. Mary’s College Women’s Lacrosse Takes on Mary Washington

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team stepped out of United East Conference play Wednesday afternoon (April 1) to face former league rival, University of Mary Washington. St. Mary's College (2-9) stayed on Mary Washington's heels for most of the game until the Eagles (6-5) used a seven-goal fourth quarter to post an 18-9 win.
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks opened the game with a 3-1 run, including two goals and an assist from junior midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex). Mary Washington closed out the first quarter with three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead into the second period.
  • Elling once again scored the first goal of the new frame before the Eagles responded with four unanswered goals to double their lead to 8-4 with 4:49 remaining in the first half. SMCM cut its deficit in half with back-to-back goals from senior captain Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), going into halftime down 8-6.
  • UMW outscored St. Mary's College in the third quarter to claim an 11-8 lead before the final frame.
  • Junior attacker Grace Maurice (Clinton, Conn./Cheshire) pulled the Seahawks within two a minute into the fourth quarter, but Mary Washington shut down SMCM and closed out the game on a 7-0 run for the win.

  • The Eagles outshot St. Mary's College, 38-23, and edged the hosts, 14-13, in ground balls.
  • UMW also posted a marginal edge in draw controls, 15-13, while scoring on six of its 10 free-position shots. The Seahawks went 2-for-5 on eight-meter shots.

  • Elling finished the game with three goals and an assist while adding three draws and one caused turnover.
  • Jaffurs and first-year attacker Sarah Fitter (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) both contributed two goals and one helper.
  • Senior captain Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) won seven draw controls while chipping in a goal and an assist.
  • Junior defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) collected a team-best three caused turnovers while senior captain Carsyn Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) and junior midfielder Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) each grabbed two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Additionally, junior defender Mira Broy (Parkton, Md./Hereford) scooped up a team-high three ground balls.
  • Junior goalie Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) made six stops in 57:09.

  • Sadie Laughlin was all over the field for the Eagles, leading offensively with seven points on six goals and an assist while adding five draw controls, three caused turnovers, and two ground balls.
