ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon (April 18) making it a memorable Senior Day for team captain
Max Esztergomi (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), the team's lone senior. St. Mary's College (9-6, 6-1 UEC) notched a 6-1 United East Conference win over Penn State Abington (7-7, 3-4 UEC).
With the win, the Seahawks locked up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming United East Men's Tennis Championship Tournament. SMCM has earned a first-round bye (April 25) and will host the winner between No. 3 seed Penn College and No. 6 seed Lancaster Bible in the semifinals on April 29 at the Somerset Tennis Complex at a time to be determined.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
- Esztergomi and first-year Aidan Cron (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) notched a 6-1 win over Vlad Borodaykevych and Sanat Juneja at the No. 2 pairing.
- Graduate student Joey Carson (Sykesville, Md./Century) and junior Andrew Hand (Huntington, Md./Huntington) clinched the doubles point for St. Mary's College with a 6-1 victory over Charlie Batman and Kaan Ofluoglu at the No. 3 spot.
- Abington avoided the doubles shutout when Daniel Trott and Mark Tymchenko picked up a 7-5 triumph over sophomores Alex Lyman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Jacob Nelson (Olney, Md./Sherwood) at the No. 1 pairing.
SINGLES
- Lyman clinched the match for the Seahawks with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Juneja at the No. 4 spot, giving SMCM a 4-0 lead.
- Ofluoglu tallied the Nittany Lions' lone point with a gritty 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 triumph over Carson at the No. 5 spot.
