LANDISVILLE, Pa. – For the third straight season, the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team has claimed the United East Conference Championship Tournament runner-up trophy. No. 2 seed St. Mary's College (10-7) dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 1 seed Penn State Harrisburg (11-7) Sunday morning (May 3) in the championship match at Hempfield recCenter.
The Seahawks last captured the United East crown in 2022 and 2023.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
- Colin Flack and Ved Pawar, the Tournament MVP, took the No. 2 position, 6-3, over junior Andrew Hand (Huntington, Md./Huntington) and sophomore Alex Lyman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis).
- Harrisburg locked up the doubles point when Damir Cutric and Cooper Wheeler posted a 6-4 victory over senior captain Max Esztergomi (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and sophomore Jacob Nelson (Olney, Md./Sherwood) at the No. 1 spot.
SINGLES
- Pawar stretched the Lion lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Esztergomi at the No. 2 spot.
- Lyman pulled SMCM within one with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ian Optiz at the No. 4 position.
- Wheeler gave Harrisburg a two-point advantage with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nelson at the No. 1 spot.
- Cutric clinched the Lions' third straight United East championship ring with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 triumph over first-year Aidan Cron (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) at No. 3 singles.
