Seahawks Edged in Season Opener

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball (0-1, 0-0 CAC) fell this evening to Widener University (1-0) with a final score of 72-43. This was the Seahawks' first home game of the season in the One Love Seahawk Invitational.

How it Happened

  • The first quarter of the game was back and forth with the Seahawks and the Pride getting points off of fouls and fast breaks. Widener was then able to put up seven more points making the score 17-10 at the end of the first quarter. 

  • St. Mary's College did not slow down despite a nine-point lead in the second quarter for Widener. A three-point shot from Kelli Jenkins brought the Seahawks' deficit to six points with one minute and 18 seconds left in the first half. The two teams entered the third quarter with a score of 34-23.

  • The third quarter started with the Pride going on a ten-point run, which was halted by Cassidy Kupchinskas making a free-throw shot. Widener made a three-point shot which was immediately answered back by Seahawk, Jenkins with a three-pointer of her own. 

  • In the fourth quarter, Widener went on a 15 point scoring run bringing the score to 67-31. Jenkins nailed two more three-point shots in the last quarter and along with Hallie Persell's defensive rebounds, the Seahawks were able to keep the Pride at bay. The final buzzer ended the game with a score of 72-43 in Widener's favor.

Inside the Box Score

  • St. Mary's College had Widener beat on field goal percentage ending with 39.1% for the Seahawks and 38.6% for the Pride. Jenkins' three-pointers positively affected the Seahawks' three-point percentage, which ended at 41.7% compared to Widener's 38.6%.

  • Persell leads the Seahawks in rebounds and defensive rebounds with seven total. A large difference in the two teams was seen when tallying points off of turnovers. Widener capitalized off of turnovers by scoring 28 points, while St. Mary's College scored seven points off of turnovers.
