FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - St. Mary's College of Maryland first year attacker Lucy Gussio highlighted the women's lacrosse Capital Athletic Conference awards for the Seahawks being named the Rookie of the Year. In addition, senior attacker/midfielder Caitlin Katchmar, first year defender Mary Kate Fitz-Patrick, and senior goalkeeper Emma Brown were selected to the All-CAC Second Team, the league announced today.
Gussio, a native of Baldwin, Maryland, made significant contributions on the offensive end for the Seahawks this season. She finished with 51 points for the fourth-best mark on the squad, netting 40 goals and dishing out 11 assists. Her 40 goals on the year was the third highest total on this year's Seahawk squad.
Katchmar makes her second consecutive appearance on the All-CAC Team after being selected to the First Team last year and Second Team this year. The Phoenix, Maryland native finished the year with a team-best 75 points, recording 49 goals and 26 assists. Katchmar's season total in points was good for the fifth best mark in the CAC. In addition, Katchmar tallied 14 ground balls, 14 draw controls, and caused six turnovers. Katchmar also captured CAC Offensive Player of the Week honors on Apr. 22 and was named the St. Mary's College Student-Athlete of the Month in April. In her four-year career as a Seahawk, Katchmar totaled 135 career points and 101 career goals.
Fitz-Patrick is another first year player that immediately made an impact for the Seahawks this season. The defender from Cockeysville, Maryland started in all 18 games this year and recorded 37 ground balls, 23 draw controls, and 16 caused turnovers. Her mark in ground balls was good for second on the team.
Brown makes her first appearance on the All-CAC squad as a Second Team selection in her senior season. The Warwick, New York native collected 175 saves and allowed 13.07 goals per game. Additionally, Brown posted a 45.2 save percentage in cage. Brown's mark in saves comes in at second in the CAC. The 5-7 goalkeeper finished her Seahawk career with an impressive 496 saves and a 12.63 goals against average.
