David 'DJ' Hayes joined the St. Mary's College athletics department as the head athletic trainer in August 2021. Hayes' primary sports are volleyball, men's basketball, men's lacrosse, and men's and women's rowing.

Hayes came to St. Mary's City after spending seven years at St. Mary's Ryken High School (2014-21) in Leonardtown, Md. He served as the Knights' head athletic trainer for the first six years before being promoted to assistant athletic director/director of athletic training in his final year at St. Mary's Ryken. During his time at Ryken, Hayes was also the director of medical services for Summer Knights, the school's summer athletic and enrichment camps.

The Bensalem, Pa., native also worked with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs during the 2016 season as a volunteer intern athletic trainer after spending two years at Camp Woodward in Woodward, Pa., working with extreme sports such as BMX and skateboarding.

Hayes worked with the Temple University Owls men's and women's cross country and track & field squads as well as with teams in the Philadelphia School District between 2012 and 2014.
