Ellington Carthan joined the Seahawks track & field coaching staff during the Spring of 2024 before becoming an assistant cross country coach during the Fall of 2024. Carthan works with the distance and mid-distance runners. He is a USATF Certified Cross Country Specialist as well as a USATF Level 1 Certified Coach.
Carthan ran two seasons of indoor track & field at the University of Baltimore County (2012-14) while being a member of the outdoor team in 2013. During the indoor season, he ran the 500m and was a member of the 4x400m relay while competing in high jump as well.
As a youngster, he was a member of the Durham Striders in the USATF Junior Olympic Division from 2005-09. In 2009, Carthan ranked in Top 26 in the nation for his age group in the 800m, 1500m, 4x400m, and high jump. That same year, he was a member of the record-setting 4x800m relay at Enloe Magnet HS (Raleigh, N.C.) - a record which still stands.
Away from the track, Carthan is an assistant professor of music at St. Mary's College and is an active performing artist. He appreciates the opportunity to work with students as a coach and as a professor.
