Women’s Soccer Captures Thrilling 2-1 Victory Over Stevenson

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - After a day of celebrating the newly dedicated Jamie L. Roberts Stadium, St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team (2-2) found success tonight (Sept. 7) in their match against Stevenson University (1-2).

St. Mary's - 2, Stevenson - 1

How it Happened

  • The first half was an even match-up with the Mustangs recording six shots and the Seahawks recording seven. Both teams played with athleticism, leading to a score of 0-0 at the end of the first half. Defensively, Kaitlyn Steigner used her height to break up numerous Stevenson passes inside the box.

  • In the 78th minute of the game, sophomore forward, Megan Tazza found the back of the net off of a leading pass from sophomore midfielder Ashley Yurich. Six minutes later the Mustangs answered back with a goal that was inches out of first-year goalkeeper Audra Haines' reach in the bottom right corner of the goal. Defenders, Steigner and Ines Garofolo made extremely important defensive plays tonight which attributed to the win.

  • Not even a full minute after Stevenson's lone goal, a foul inside the box on Tazza gave junior midfielder, Emmey German a penalty kick opportunity. Her shot was perfectly placed in the top left corner of the goal, which secured the Seahawks' victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • Despite Stevenson having possession of the ball for 59% of the game, the Seahawks made their possessions count.

  • The night ended with the Mustangs recording 11 shots and the Seahawks recording ten.
