York, Pa. - The York (Pa.)
College volleyball team picked up their sixth Capital Athletic
Conference win of the season on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory
over the visiting St. Mary's (Md.) College Seahawks, 30-24, 23-30,
36-34, 30-27. The Spartans improve to 28-5 on the year with a
6-2 CAC record. St. Mary's falls to 24-6 and 6-2 in
conference play.
The Spartans (28-5, 6-2 CAC) notched a 30-24 game one win as
Lindsay Schorner tallied several kills in the game.
In the second game, St. Mary's (24-6, 6-2 CAC) recorded five of the
first seven points taking the wind out of the Spartans' sails.
Grabbing an 8-7 lead, the Seahawks never looked back and won
the second frame 30-23.
By far the best game of the night came in the third
stanza. Finding themselves down 18-13, the Spartans battled
back eventually, taking a 29-27 lead but unfortunately could not
close out St. Mary's in regulation and the game went to extra
points. Up 35-34, York libero Laura Krajewski made
an incredible sprawling dig that led to a Jaclyn Davis
kill for the game victory.
In the fourth game, the Spartans forced the Seahawks into a pair
of time-outs during the frame as all the momentum belonged to the
green and white. Alishia Waltermyer finished off the
match for the Spartans as the freshman tallied her 13th kill of the
evening. Waltermyer's kills gave the Spartans' the 30-27 game
victory and the 3-1 match win.
Schorner led the green and white with 22 kills while Waltermyer
notched 13 kills and three block assists. Davis garnering 10
kills in just two games, while the reigning CAC Player-of-the-Week,
Katie Hertz, registered 55 assists to go along with 14
digs. Krajewski recorded 31 digs and garnered three service
aces.
For St. Mary's, Katie Ewing (Gaithersburg,
Md./Quince Orchard) led the attack with 11 kills while also
contributing a pair of block solos and a trio of block
assists. Claire Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood)
and Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City,
Md./Centennial) each recorded double-digit kills with 10
apiece. Setters Jenn Feldmann (Ellicott
City, Md./Centennial) and Megan Graydon (West Friendship,
Md./Glenelg) shared the setting responsibilities, handing out 24
and 22 assists, respectively.
Defensively, Becca Tursell (Ellicott City,
Md./Glenelg) was a force at the net turning away numerous Spartan
attempts en route to five block solos and seven block
assists. Jackie Reid (Poolesville,
Md./Poolesville) added 15 digs and Katie Obal
(Olney, Md./Sherwood) kept 14 attempts off the floor for the
Seahawks.
The Seahawks return to action this Friday and Saturday as St.
Mary's hosts its six-team Seahawk Classic. The action will
kick-off on Friday with matches at 4:00, 6:00, and 8:00.
Saturday's matches will be at 10:00 am, noon, and 2:00.
