Dover, Del. - The Capital
Athletic Conference Quarterfinal match between fourth-seeded Wesley
College and fifth-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland was decided
by penalty kicks after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw following
90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods
Saturday night.
In its first year as a member of the CAC, Wesley (7-10-1)
advances 5-4 on penalty kicks to Tuesday's CAC Semifinals at
top-seeded Salisbury University. The other semifinal match
will feature sixth-seeded Villa Julie College and second-seeded
York (Pa.) College.
St. Mary's season comes to an end with an 8-9-1 overall record
and a 5-3 mark in league action.
The Seahawks and the Wolverines were knotted 4-4 after the first
round of penalty kicks as SMCM senior Tim Carrier
(Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) and Wesley's Nick Talarico
each made a save to keep it even. Talarico denied the Hawks'
first shot in the second round of PKs and then Justin
Lambert converted on his penalty kick to send Wesley to the
semis.
The Wolverines struck first in the first stanza when Kyle
Lawrence put in John Burke's cross from eight yards
out at 42:59 and Wesley held on to its 1-0 lead for halftime.
St. Mary's responded in the second half when senior defender
Mike Rohrs (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's-Annapolis)
netted his second career goal at 55:57.
The Seahawks out-shot Wesley, 13-5, including taking eight shots
to the Wolverine's 0 in the second half. However, Talarico
kept his team in the game by making three stops that period.
St. Mary's also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Talarico finished with four stops, while Carrier made just one
save.
