St. Mary's City, Md. - Three Seahawk players in
double-digit kills helped the fourth-seeded St. Mary's College of
Maryland volleyball team post a 3-1 (27-30, 30-13, 30-28, 30-19)
victory over fifth-seeded University of Mary Washington in the
Capital Athletic Conference Quarterfinals Tuesday night.
The Seahawks (29-6) now advance to Thursday's CAC semifinal
showdown with top-seeded Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.
at 7:00. The first time these two teams met, St. Mary's
snapped the Bison's 18-match home win streak with a 3-2 setback in
The Field House on September 27.
The other semifinal match will feature second-seed Salisbury
University and third-seeded York (Pa.) College at Salisbury on
Thursday as well. The CAC Championship will be on Saturday,
November 3 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
Mary Washington (19-12) grabbed a 30-27 victory in the first
game as the Eagles started with a 2-0 lead that UMW never
relinquished. St. Mary's knotted the game at 3-3 but they
were never able to go ahead.
The start of game two was closely contested with it being tied
6-6 before the Seahawks pulled away with a 9-1 spurt, forcing the
Eagles to use their second timeout. St. Mary's went on to
close the game on a 15-6 run for the 30-13 win.
The third game witnessed eight tied scores with the last one
coming at 21-21. St. Mary's then went ahead 25-21 and the
Eagles called their second timeout. Mary Washington then
battled back to within 29-28, causing the Seahawks to use a timeout
of their own. A Katie Ewing kill gave the
Hawks the 30-28 third game triumph.
The fourth and deciding match was all St. Mary's as the Seahawks
jumped out to a 16-7 advantage and never looked, collecting a 30-19
win.
SMCM's Kellie Krouse (Baltimore, Md./Towson)
recorded a double-double on 14 kills and a dozen digs and served up
three aces, while sophomore Sarah Gregorini
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) also had a double-double on 12
kills and 13 digs. Junior Becca Tursell
(Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) was the other Seahawk with double
digit kills with 10 and added six block assists.
Defensively, junior libero Jackie Reid
(Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) kept 16 Eagle attempts off the
floor, while sophomore setter Jenn Feldmann
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) contributed 10 digs and 24 assists.
Mary Washington was offensively by Kelley
Hueber's (Grapevine, Texas) game-high 18 kills and 16
digs, while Anne Lutkenhaus (Richmond, Va./Douglas
Freeman) notched a game-high 22 digs and 14 kills.
Kathryn Carter (Moseley, Va./Midlothian) chipped
in 16 assists and 10 digs, while Caitlin Oshida
(Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) had 13 digs.
