Newport News, Va. - A goal in
each half by the sixth-ranked Christopher Newport University field
hockey team gave them a 2-0 shutout victory over St. Mary's College
of Maryland Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
Just a little over eight minutes into the start of the game,
Christopher Newport (10-1) notched its first goal when Ashley
Hay converted a pass from Haylie Black off a penalty
corner play. The Captains carried the 1-0 lead into the
break.
The Captains struck again with just over three minutes remaining
on another penalty corner as Kylie Cale took a feed from
Rhiannon Thomasson.
Senior Emily Richards (Silver Spring,
Md./Springbrook) came up with nine saves in the loss, while
Elexa Nosonchuk made seven for CNU.
Christopher Newport posted a 22-9 shot advantage as well as a
13-6 penalty corner margin.
The Seahawks will have five days to regroup before traveling to
Baltimore to take on the College of Notre Dame in non-conference
action on October 11 at 4:00.
