St. Mary's (Md.) Going to CAC Championship

Washington, D.C. - For the second time in two days, a St. Mary's College of Maryland varsity squad has made history.  This time it was the Seahawk volleyball team as they handed top-seeded Gallaudet University a 3-1 setback in the Capital Athletic Conference Semifinals Thursday night.

With the win, St. Mary's advances to the CAC Championship for the first time in program history.  The Hawks will travel to Salisbury, Maryland on Saturday to take on second-seeded Salisbury at 6:00 in the Maggs Center.  The Sea Gulls swept third-seeded York (Pa.) College in last night's other semifinal match.

The first game witnessed 13 tied scores with the last one coming at 25-25 and then the Seahawks (30-6) closed out the game on a 5-1 run to claim a 30-26 win.

St. Mary's took a 2-0 lead in the match with a hard-fought 31-29 victory in game two.  With 12 ties, the last one came at 29-29 and the Seahawks earned the game point on a Gallaudet error.

The Bison (25-11) came out inspired in the third game and cut the Hawk lead to 2-1.  Gallaudet used an 8-0 run to post a 14-5 advantage that the Bison would never relinquish.  GU went on to win game three, 30-19.

The Seahawks regrouped and dominated the fourth game, jumping out to a 7-2 margin.  St. Mary's never lost the lead and were up by as many as 10 throughout the game, posting a 30-19 victory.

Sophomore Katie Ewing (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and junior Becca Tursell (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) controlled the Hawk offense as Ewing nailed 13 kills and Tursell recorded 11.

Defensively, as a team, St. Mary's collected 18.0 total team blocks with Tursell notching three solo blocks and six block assists.  Junior libero Jackie Reid (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) registered 14 digs and served up three aces, while sophomore Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added 10 digs and seven kills.

Setters Jenn Feldmann (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Megan Graydon (West Friendship, Md./Glenelg) combined for 40 assists.
