Salisbury, Md. - The hopes of
bringing the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Volleyball
Championship trophy to St. Mary's College of Maryland were dashed
Saturday night when the tournament's second-seed, Salisbury
University, handed fourth-seeded St. Mary's a 3-1 (30-26, 19-30,
24-30, 18-30) setback in the CAC title match.
With the win, Salisbury (28-10) earns the conference's automatic
bid to the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball
Tournament. The win also gives the Sea Gulls their fourth CAC
title and first since 2004.
The Seahawks (30-7) came out on top in the first game, 30-26, as
St. Mary's used an 8-4 run to close out the game.
Salisbury evened the match at 1-1 with a 30-19 win in the second
game. After the Sea Gulls knotted the game at 16-16,
Salisbury cruised to the win with a 14-3 run.
St. Mary's opened up game three with a 5-0 lead behind three
service aces from sophomore setter Jenn Feldmann
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial). The Seahawks went on to
increase their lead to 8-1 before Salisbury rallied back and tied
the game at 11-11. St. Mary's jumped ahead 22-17 but another
rally by the Sea Gulls (this time a 13-2 run) game them a 30-24
triumph and a 2-1 match lead.
Following a 13 all score in the fourth game, Salisbury raced to
a 30-18 victory and the program's fourth conference title.
Junior Becca Tursell (Ellicott City,
Md./Glenelg) was the only Seahawk in double-digit kills as she
posted 11 kills with only two errors in 20 attempts for a .450
hitting percentage. Tursell also helped defensively with 7.0
total blocks on three block solos and four block assists.
Sophomore Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City,
Md./Centennial) led the defense with 11 digs while adding eight
kills. Feldmann finished with 23 assists, eight digs, and
three aces.
