Arlington, Va. - In a battle
of unbeatens, the Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball
team came out on top as the Saints handed St. Mary's College of
Maryland its first setback of the 2007-08 campaign - a 79-70 loss
at the Verizon Sports Arena Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic
Conference (CAC) play.
The Seahawks (4-1, 1-1 CAC) were unable to overcome a 12-point
halftime deficit despite a game- and season-high 23 points from
sophomore guard Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie,
Md./Elizabeth Seton), including 17 in the second half.
The only time St. Mary's in the game were the first two minutes
of the contest as a pair of free throws by Saint-Aubin and a jumper
by junior forward Allie Scott (Laurel,
Md./Atholton) gave the Hawks a 6-2 advantage at 18:24.
Marymount took over the lead at 16:42 on a jumper by Kathleen
Brown. However, Scott's jumper at 12:55 knotted the game
for the third and last time at 11-11. From that point, the
Saints mounted a 26-8 run to post their biggest lead of the half at
37-19 with 4:29 remaining in the first stanza.
Marymount (5-0, 2-0 CAC) carried a 44-32 margin into
intermission as Kathryn Wilson had 10 points to pace the
Saints who made 50 percent of their shots in the half. Scott
led the Seahawks with 10 points.
St. Mary's rallied back in the second half with a 22-13 run to
only trail 57-54 with 11:31 left to go. But that would be as
close as the Seahawks would get following a 14-6 spurt by Marymount
to once again boast a double-digit lead at 4:51 (71-60).
Marymount had four Saints in double-figures with Wilson leading
the way with 19 points, while Brown finished with 18 and eight
rebounds. Meredith Levison added 15 points and seven
caroms and Terell White chipped in 14 points and six
boards. Stephanie Witko hauled in a game-high 13
rebounds as well as a game-best seven assists.
Along with her 23 points, Saint-Aubin also had seven caroms,
three assists and two steals. Scott finished the day with 17
points, six boards, and three assists. Senior guard
Megan Uglik (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) was the only
other Seahawk to score in double-digits with 16 while handing out
five assists. Murphy grabbed a season-high nine caroms, while
adding eight points.
Marymount's next action will be Saturday, December 8 when the
Saints host CAC newcomer, Wesley College, at 2:00. The
Seahawks will look to get back on the winning track next Wednesday
when St. Mary's makes the trek to Salisbury, Md. to face Salisbury
University at 5:30.
