St. Mary's City, Md. - Junior midfielder
Taylor Cervenka (Damascus, Md./Damascus) found the
back of the net twice in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland
women's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout of Hood College in the
Seahawks' Capital Athletic Conference opener on Monday afternoon.
Cervenka started the scoring for St. Mary's (2-3, 1-0 CAC) from
the opening kickoff as she booted one in from 25 yards out that hit
the crossbar and fell in for a 1-0 Hawk lead just 34 seconds in.
Hood's freshman Rachelle Buhrman (Smithsburg,
Md./Middletown) made five first-half saves and the Blazer defense
helped to keep St. Mary's lead at one through halftime despite 14
first-half shots by the Seahawks.
In the second half, Cervenka struck again, this time converting
a cross from sophomore forward Kaitlin Boswell
(Baltimore, Md./Friends School) at 65:16.
The next to score for St. Mary's was junior midfielder
Katrina Borden (Hartfield, Va./Wakefield) who
shaked-and-baked herself into the box and ripped a shot just inside
the left post at 83:46. Three minutes later, junior
midfielder Katie Klotz (Bowie, Md./Good Counsel)
took a cross from sophomore midfielder Meghan
Anderson (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and fired one in
near the right post.
The Hawks owned shots, 27-4, and collected 10 corners to Hood's
one.
Freshman Elizabeth Benge (Bethesda, Md./Walter
Johnson) made her first collegiate start and recorded two stops for
St. Mary's. Buhrman went on to finish with 11 saves in the
loss.
The Seahawks return to action Thursday, September 13 when SMCM
travels to Washington, D.C. for another Capital Athletic Conference
tilt against Gallaudet University at 4:00. Hood will travel
to Williamsport, Pa. to face Lycoming College in non-conference
action at noon on September 15.
